Minneapolis consistently ranks among the best cities in the country for bicycling. With 89 miles of trails, 36 miles of curb-protected bikeways and paths, and over 140 miles of painted bike lanes, cycling is one of the most popular ways to get around the city.
Popular, however, doesn’t mean risk free. Always put your safety first and if you are ever in a bike crash, know the attorneys at Brazil Sweeney Law Group will fight to protect your rights and get you the full compensation you deserve if you are injured.
Popular Minneapolis Biking Trails
Seasoned cyclists, commuter bikers and leisure riders can enjoy picturesque views without straying too far from the city with these convenient and scenic Minneapolis bike trails.
The Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway
Part of the Federal Highway Administration’s National Scenic Byways Program, the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway offers 51 miles of bike trails that link and weave through seven segments of Minneapolis. It is one of the country’s longest continuous systems of public urban parkways and will take you past lakes, creeks, woodlands, riverbanks and wetlands, as well as constructed features like canals, lagoons, greenways, parks, playgrounds, gardens and bridges.
The Midtown Greenway Regional Trail
Following the path of an abandoned railroad corridor, the Midtown Greenway Regional Trail is a 5.9-mile biking and walking trail in the heart of south Minneapolis. It runs from the Mississippi River to the western boundary of Minneapolis where it connects to the Cedar Lake Regional Trail. Much of the trail is below grade and separate from the street, offering not only a unique perspective of the city, but a mostly barrier-free ride.
The Chain of Lakes
A highlight of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, the Chain of the Lakes is a 15-mile lakeside loop of paved paths circling Brownie Lake, Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles, Bda Maka Ska and Lake Harriet. This beautiful route offers stunning lake and skyline views with separate lanes for walkers and bikers.
East River Parkway
One of two trails that travel along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, the East River Parkway follows the east bank from the University of Minnesota East Bank campus to the eastern city boundary, where it continues along the river to downtown St. Paul. For much of the trail, there are parallel trail routes. One is next to the parkway higher up on the river bluff, and the other is below, closer to the river. The lower trail passes through East River Flats Park and is prone to flooding.
West River Parkway
The other trail that follows the Mississippi River through Minneapolis is the West River Parkway. It travels along the west bank of the Mississippi between Minnehaha Regional Park and Ole Olson Park, offering spectacular views and connecting notable riverfront attractions such as Above the Falls, Central Mississippi Riverfront and Mississippi Gorge.
