Holidays Add the Dangerous Potential for Delivery Truck Accidents

The holidays are a time of celebration for many. While you enjoy these last weeks of 2020 by driving around town to view Christmas lights or to see loved ones via socially distanced means, you should stay alert. Vehicle accidents, especially those involving commercial trucks, are dangerous during the holiday season.

Why the Holidays Can Increase Delivery Truck Accidents

The winter season is dangerous for all travelers. Snow, ice and rain make the highways treacherous for even the most skilled drivers. Yet, the holidays are also a time of hustle and bustle, especially for delivery and commercial trucks.

The holiday rush means more commercial trucks are filling the roads, trying to deliver gifts and necessities fast. And, unfortunately, some drivers may drive drowsy to fulfill delivery work. These factors—plus the potential for wintry roads—can increase the chance of truck accidents, which are often fatal.

How to Avoid a Commercial Truck Accident

While you’re out and about this season, it’s important to do your part in avoiding commercial truck accidents. Here are some tips:

  • Stay alert: Always pay attention to what’s in front of and behind you as you travel. Don’t text or use any electronic device while driving to avoid distraction.
  • Keep a safe distance between you and the truck: Many delivery trucks must make quick, sudden stops. This is especially true in heavily residential areas. Be sure to keep a safe distance between you and the truck to avoid a crash.
  • Use caution when passing: Do not pass while going up or down a hill and always pass on the left side of the road. Don’t merge back into your lane until you can see the truck in your rearview mirror. If you’re passing a truck that has stopped to make a delivery, make sure the driver is clearly out of the way of your vehicle before passing.
